Beat 13 - The Dore

The DoreVouchers - Adults 4/ Under 14s 2.
Wading difficulty: 2

The river Dore is the most productive tributary of the Monnow. It flows in a southerly direction from its source near Hay-on-Wye, through Herefordshire’s famous Golden Valley before joining the Monnow below Pontrilas. Despite this being genuine small stream fishing where a short rod is essential, thigh or chest waders are required to negotiate your way through deceptively deep pools. Wild trout are the main inhabitants of the Dore although grayling are present (this is where they were introduced to the Monnow system in the 1860s), making this beat one of the few in the whole of the Wye catchment where this species can be caught in a small stream. The stretch is quite short and is suitable for 3 or 4 hours fishing for one or two people. Look out for water voles, which the River Monnow Project is currently trying to re-introduce.
B&B accommodation is available next to the water at Tan House Farm 01981 240204.
