Middle & Lower Wye

Downstream of Hay the Wye takes on a leisurely, meandering character, with a more uniform width and depth. Some of the Wye's most productive salmon fishing beats can be found in this part of the river, which generally fishes best at medium to low water levels.

The middle and lower reaches also provide the best of the coarse fishing opportunities, with barbel, chub and pike being the main target species. Dace, perch and roach can also be found here.

Canoeing
A right of navigation exists on the Wye downstream of Hay. These beats may therefore be subject to canoe traffic, especially during summer and during the middle part of Saturdays, Sundays and bank holidays. If possible, anglers are advised to concentrate their efforts early and late in the day during these times. This avoids the peak times for canoe traffic while also coinciding with the best times to fish.
