Description

ANGLERS WANTING COARSE FISHING FOR 2016 SHOULD BOOK ON TO THE UPPER OR LOWER BACKNEY FISHERIES.

Approximately 1 mile of double bank fishing located a few miles upstream of Ross. The fishery is open exclusively for salmon fishing from March 15th to June 15th and given the right water conditions, offers a good chance of a Wye springer. There are several named pools to try and croys from which to fish). The lower sections around The Monument are characterised by shallower, faster water providing good opportunities for fly fishing. Wading is required here but is relatively easy over the gravel riverbed. The middle and upper sections are deeper and slower and more suitable for spinning, as is the Bridge Pool at the bottom end of the fishery. Access to the entire length is good although bankside vegetation in the summer months can become challenging, as is the case on most Wye fisheries. Although the fishing is double bank, access is via the right (north) bank only.

The fishery retains the use of 1 rod at all times.

PLEASE NOTE THAT ALTHOUGH THE BEAT IS DOUBLE BANK FISHING, ACCESS IS FROM THE RIGHT BANK ONLY IF LOOKING DOWNSTREAM. NO ACCESS OR FISHING IS PERMITTED TO THE LEFT BANK.

Guiding

A guiding/ghillie service for anglers is available from Backney's long-serving river keeper, Keith Maddox, who has a wealth of knowledge of the beat. If you wish to book him for a day or just a few hours, he can be contacted directly on 07927 456 214.

Please note that no other Instructor/Guides are permitted to operate on the fishery.

Canoes

Canoe traffic can be heavy from 10am to 4pm at weekends during the warmer months, and especially during bank holidays.
