Roving Voucher Scheme

Stream Fishing

Game Fishing: If you enjoy stalking genuinely wild fish in remote mountain streams then these beats will be just what you are looking for. Set in stunning scenery, these tributary rivers can be anything from the six feet wide Clettwr to the medium sized Upper Wye, Irfon and Ithon. Whichever you decide upon, an 8ft, # 4/5 is the largest rod that you will need and some of the smaller streams require much lighter gear to get around bankside foliage. All of these beats offer feisty little wild brown trout that are fantastic fun to catch on lightweight outfits. Bigger fish, however, are present - Voucher beats have produced both brown trout and grayling to over 3lbs since the start of the scheme in 2003. The rewards are there to be found!

Coarse Fishing: Until 2007, the Roving Voucher beats offered only fly fishing for trout, grayling and the occasional chub. Now that the scheme has been expanded into Herefordshire, we have been able to access the coarse fishing potential on the Lugg and Arrow system. You now have the chance to catch all the Wye’s coarse species on a medium sized river.

To access the fishing available through the ‘Roving Voucher Scheme’ you need to be in possession of 3 things, all of which are obtainable from the Foundation:

Once you have these, miles of fishing is instantly available to you without having to do anything else except get yourself there. The beauty of this scheme is that you don’t have to ring anyone up to book in advance, or track anyone down when you arrive. If on Sunday afternoon you decide you want to go fishing, off you go!

4 steps to get you fishing......

1. Request your free copy of this seasons Passport by clicking on the image (right).
To fish the Roving Voucher Scheme you must be in possession of one of these as it contains all the maps and directions for each beat, information that is not given on the website.

2.Then call us on 01982 551 520 and buy the following:
A book of Roving Vouchers (either from the Foundation or from one of our external suppliers). A book of 5 costs £12.50, a book of 10 £25.00 If you haven’t already got one, an EA rod licence, available from the Foundation, Post Offices or the Environment Agency.

3. Read your Passport and choose which beat(s) you want to fish.
You have 39 to select from (see below), over 60km of quality fishing in stunning countryside at your fingertips!

4. Get your gear and jump into the car.
Having shown up at one of the beats, all you do is post the required amount of vouchers (given at the top of each beat write-up in the Passport) in a box next to the water – you are then entitled to fish that beat for the day. It’s as simple as that!

Additional Details

Please note that no dogs are allowed on any of the Roving Voucher beats. Other regulations such as bag limits vary - please see individual beat descriptions for these. Maps and directions are only given in the 'Wye & Usk Passport' and are not detailed on the website.

For the uninitiated who are not lucky enough to have a friend who is experienced in small stream fishing, we recommend hiring the services of a guide/instructor. There is only so much one can learn from a book and the knowledge they impart will be with you every time you fish thereafter. Details can be found under Other Services.

Roving Vouchers purchased from the Wye & Usk Foundation can also be used to obtain fishing on two similar schemes.
