Roving Voucher Scheme

Small river wild brown trout fishing on a river Wye tributary.Fly fishing on the River Lugg for grayling

For those fly fishers who enjoy stalking genuinely wild fish in remote waters, these beats are just what you are looking for! Set in stunning scenery, they can be anything from six feet wide mountain streams to more leisurely paced, medium-sized rivers. Whichever you decide upon, an 8 foot 3/4 weight is the largest rod that you will need and most of the streams require smaller rods to get underneath the bankside foliage. All these beats offer feisty wild trout that are fantastic fun to catch on lightweight outfits. The average size is probably around 6 to 8 inches. Bigger fish, however, are present - the voucher beats have produced both wild brown trout and grayling to over 3lbs since the start of the scheme in 2003. The rewards are there to be found!

To access the fishing available through the 'Roving Voucher Scheme' you need to be in possession of 3 things, all of which are obtainable from the Foundation:

Once you have these, miles of fishing is instantly available to you without having to do anything else except get yourself there. The beauty of this scheme is that you don’t have to ring anyone up to book in advance, or track anyone down when you arrive. If on Sunday afternoon you decide you want to go fishing, off you go!

4 steps to get you fishing......

  1. Request your free copy of this seasons Passport by clicking on the image (right).
To fish the Roving Voucher Scheme you must be in possession of one of these as it contains all the maps and directions for each beat. This information is not given on the website.

  2. Then buy the following:
    £12.50 for a book of 5, £25.00 for a book of 10). There are 3 ways to do this……
    a. By calling the Foundation on 01982 551 520.
    b. Via our Online Booking System
    c. Or from one of our external outlets. These establishments are often open outside office hours (please see individual websites for opening times). Their locations are marked on the Roving Voucher fisheries map with a green star and their details given below.
If you haven't already got one, you will also need an Environment Agency rod licence, available from the Foundation (call 01982 551 520), Post Offices or from the Environment Agency.

  3. Read your Passport and choose which beat(s) you want to fish.
You have over 40 to select from (see below), over 60km of quality fishing in stunning countryside at your fingertips!

  4. Get your gear and jump into the car.
Having shown up at one of the beats, all you do is post the required amount of vouchers (given at the top of each beat write-up in the Passport) in a box next to the water - you are then entitled to fish that beat for the day. It's as simple as that!

Before using the Roving Voucher Scheme, please ensure you have read the full Terms & Conditions of their use.

Additional Details

Please note that no dogs are allowed on any of the Roving Voucher beats. Other regulations such as bag limits vary - please see individual beat descriptions for these. Maps and directions are only given in the 'Wye & Usk Passport' and are not detailed on the website.

For the uninitiated who are not lucky enough to have a friend who is experienced in small stream fishing, we recommend hiring the services of a guide/instructor. There is only so much one can learn from a book and the knowledge they impart will be with you every time you fish thereafter. Details can be found under Other Services.

Roving Vouchers purchased from the Wye & Usk Foundation can also be used to obtain fishing on three similar schemes.
