Land of the Chickens

These photos show effluent from a free range chicken farm flowing through a field and into a nearby stream in the Ithon catchment. The increase in phosphate from such run-off are the main cause of algal blooms shown below. 104 more free range chicken sites have been approved by Powys CC in the last 10 years, with just 1 application rejected by planners in this period.

In 2014 protracted algal blooms, caused by excessive phosphates, affected the Wye from above Builth Wells to below Monmouth.
