New Fishing Book & River Maps

Waterlust is Rob Olsens latest book and includes stories about fishing on the Wye. A signed copy will be available to bid for in our upcoming auction

Wednesday 17th October, 2018

It’s probably still a little early to mention Christmas but anyone interested our rivers may like to know that a new book of fishing stories is about to published, many of which are based around the Wye. “Waterlust” is Rob Olsen’s second publication after the fantastic “Tom’s Book” and will be available to buy on 31 October. A limited number of signed hardback copies can be ordered now via Harper Angling Books.

Rob has very kindly donated a signed copy to the Foundation’s upcoming fundraising auction, which runs from 19 November to 9 December. We are still collecting lots so if anyone else wishes to donate something we’d be very grateful. It doesn’t necessarily need to be fishing related – current lots include damson gin and a day’s hospitality at Chepstow Racecourse! All proceeds from the auction will go towards the Foundation’s Endowment Fund.

New to the Foundation’s shop are some wonderful maps by Maude Parker of the Wye showing the historic beats and pool names. The two maps (upper and lower river) will look great on your wall of your study/living room/fishing hut/downstairs toilet! A few copies have also been hand-painted.
Maps of the Wye, showing historic beats and pool names are now available via the Fishing Passport website
The proceeds are split between us and the Wye Preservation Trust. Please see here for more details and how to purchase them.

We would like to take this opportunity to remind you about our Annual Meeting on Friday next week (26 Oct) at 6.30pm at the Three Counties Hotel, Hereford. In addition to presentations from WUF staff, we’re delighted to say that our guest speaker will be Nigel Elgar of Dwr Cymru Welsh Water. Nigel will be giving an overview of their Brecon Beacons Mega Catchment initiative, which will be of special interest to Usk owners and anglers.

Everyone and anyone is welcome to the meeting. All we ask in return is that you let us know you are coming by emailing us or registering via our website.

We will also be attending the European Sport Fishing Show at the UWE Exhibition Centre, Bristol on Saturday 3 and Sunday 4 November. Chris Gurney from WUF will be in attendance so anyone with any questions about the Fishing Passport please do drop by and see him.

Finally, today is the last day of salmon fishing on most Wye and Usk fisheries (extension to the 25 Oct on the Wye above Llanwrthwl and tributaries). The 2018 season is ending in similar fashion to how it begun – with high water levels but thankfully without the snow!

However, the upper and middle reaches of the Usk and upper beats of the Wye are at a good height so we hope that a few people will be ending season on a high note.

All the best from WUF.
